Sgt. Jill Birkenmeier has been in Law Enforcement for the past 21 years. She has worked with Broussard Police Department, Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Department and the United States Border Patrol. Sgt. Birkenmeier has spent 17 years of her 21 years in Law Enforcement working in K9. She was the first female K9 handler at the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Department and worked her way up to the position of Sergeant over the K9 section also being the first female to ever accomplish this. Sgt. Birkenmeier also worked as a Patrol Sergeant at the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Department during her 15 years of working there. Sgt. Birkenmeier was given numerous accolades during her employment there such as: The Deputy of the year award from the VFW in 2004, Deputy’s Choice Award for 2010 and Law Enforcement Commendation Award given by The Sons of the American Revolution for 2011.
Sgt. Birkenmeier is the first full time K9 handler at Broussard Police Department and the first female Sergeant. Her training and credentials consist of: National Police Canine Association member and certifying official since 1999, Certified Juvenile Detective through LSU, SWAT school through Lafayette Police Department, Acadiana Law Enforcement Training Academy instructor, PPCT instructor and several other certifications. Sgt. Birkenmeier certifies other K9 teams from surrounding parishes and states through the National Police Canine Association and also assist other agencies on calls with her present K9 partner.
